The University of California, Berkeley has an unsurpassed tradition of excellence. One key to this tradition is our extraordinary student-athletes, young men and women who excel not only on the playing field, but also in the classroom. The dedication they bring to their sports and studies enriches the entire campus. The skills they learn in high-level athletic competition provide a solid foundation for future success.

Our student-athletes deserve first-rate resources to reach their full potential and consistently form the winning teams around which Cal’s alumni and friends can rally. Cal supporters recognized this fact when, almost a century ago, they gave generously to fund the construction of California Memorial Stadium.

The California Memorial Stadium Campaign will raise funds to preserve the historic character of the stadium while bringing it up to world-class standards — with respect to student-athlete needs, fan amenities, and safety — in keeping with the Berkeley tradition.

The first component of the project will be anchored by the top-caliber Student-Athlete High Performance Center, built just outside the stadium’s historic west wall.

A 142,000 square-foot facility, the center will provide locker rooms, meeting rooms, and offices for football and 12 of Cal’s Olympic sports. It will also house a state-of-the-art training, applied sports science and medicine complex for year-round access by approximately 450 student-athletes.

In addition, the new training complex will feature an academic center where all student-athletes will have access to the resources they need — from computers to tutors — to succeed in their studies as much as they do in competition. Our goal is to help our student-athletes achieve the high standards that have always been the hallmark of our University.

Cal fans can also expect to reap rewards. New pedestrian plazas and beautifully landscaped open spaces will give the Cal community additional gathering places and will better connect the stadium’s western approach with the rest of campus. Plans are also being developed to improve restroom facilities, seating, other fan amenities and game-day parking in Phase II of the Stadium Master Plan.

More than 80 years ago, when the citizens of the State of California rallied to build Memorial Stadium, they could hardly have imagined what they would create. Not just a stadium but a legacy, a place where generations of Golden Bears have spent days making memories and building friendships that last a lifetime.

Now, as we move forward with this campaign, we invite you to build on this legacy, to create a new facility that is true to Cal’s unique tradition of academic and athletic excellence.
